The small coastal town of Arromanches-les-Bains is located in the Calvados department, close to the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Regional Nature Park, about 6.9 miles (11 km) northeast of Bayeux and 18.6 miles (30 km) northwest of Caen. It extends over 338 acres (137 ha) from 0 to 180 ft (0 to 55 m) above sea level. This seaside resort had only 473 inhabitants in 2019 but it benefits from an international reputation linked to a unique work in history: its artificial port built in the open sea to help the liberation of France in 1944. Its remains, visible in this photo and from the La Digue promenade, as well as the commemorative museum of the Allied landing still attract many visitors.
