The major difference between ski touring and downhill skiing is that ski touring also requires going up the slopes on skis. A special binding allows the heel of the foot to lift, and the ski does not slip backward thanks to skins attached to its sole. The practice of ski touring is free on unmarked mountain routes but also in many resorts that offer secure tracks not far from the slopes.
