In skating, the skier progresses on flat tracks by sliding thanks to lateral propulsion. He must be able to withstand long phases of gliding while advancing through unipodal position, meaning on a single ski. When the speed is too high for the skier to use his arms, like at the end of a descent, the impetus is only given by the skating movement of his legs without using poles, like in rollerblading.
