The Loyalty Islands archipelago of New Caledonia is located in the Coral Sea, between 54 and 80 nautical miles (100-150km) from the northeast coast of Grande-Terre, the main island, and about 170 nautical miles (272km) west-southwest of the island of Anatom, in Vanuatu. Exposed to the prevailing winds blowing from east-southeast, it records a significant average rainfall of 63in (1600mm) per year explaining its dense tropical vegetation.
