Always ready to lend a hand to the seine fishermen to pull the nets on the beach, the people of Martinique are among the biggest consumers of fish in the world with 107 pounds (48.7 kg) per inhabitant and per year. The depletion of resources, the difficult meteorological conditions linked to the swells, and the artisanal nature of the fishing structures do not, however, make it possible to ensure a regular and sufficient local supply to meet the demand. Fish are thus imported from Venezuela and the southern islands, and aquaculture allows a marginal production of Caribbean sea bass.
