Shutters of the Issenheim Altarpiece

The shutters of the Issenheim Altarpiece are displayed in the former Dominican convent’s church, which became the Unterlinden Museum in 1849. A major restoration of the altarpiece began in 2018 and is scheduled to be completed in 2022. The panels are being cleaned at the Centre de recherche et de restauration des Musées de France. Dedicated to Saint Anthony, the altarpiece was painted by Grünewald, around 1512-1516, for the church of the Antonine Commandery in Issenheim. These two panels represent the attack of Saint Anthony by monsters sent by Satan (left) and the visit of Saint Anthony to Saint Paul the hermit (right).
