Even today, a few rare cutler artisans still shape knife blades with a hammer and an anvil. From a thick steel bar, the blade is heated to red in the forge, then hammered. Thanks to the artisan's know-how and tools, it takes the shape of a knife. Making a knife is an art and a succession of critical steps: one imprecise gesture and the cutler has to start over again.
