In the natural pool formed by Shabadran Bay grows a flat, long and smooth seaweed resembling kelp. It is called 'ye-hawo ni Showak' (Showak's hair) in reference to Showak, the symbolic Kanak long-haired goddess. As for the coral potatoes which dot it, they are called 're-tewanod' (literally 'the sons of the little country') to recall that the island of Maré was formed by coral.
