The Serre-Ponçon lake in the Hautes-Alpes is the second largest artificial reservoir in Europe thanks to its 403ft (123m) high and 2,132ft (650m) wide dam at its base built with alluvial material from the Durance. It forms a reservoir of 1.2 billion m3 of water which covers an area of 2,800 hectares.
