Separating the fibers from the straw

Scutching is a mechanical operation that consists in separating the fibers of the straw and the fibers between them. For this last process, the straw first passes through fluted cylinders to break it without damaging the fibers. Then large combs will separate these pieces of straw called anas and the fiber. The latter is known as fiber when it is long and tow when short. Afterward, the wood and straw will serve to make litter for animals.
