The degraded oceanic climate which reigns in the plain of Alsace is favorable to the vines. In spring and winter, it often generates mist that covers the landscapes of vineyards and valleys. Wedged between the Vosges and the Black Forest, the Alsace plain originates from the collapse of the Rhine ditch and its filling by a sea during the Cenozoic era. When it withdrew, thousands of tons of sediments formed the plain and made it suitable for the cultivation of vines.
