The limestone cliffs of the Bonifacio area result from the transgression of the sea on the granite. The white horizontal layers of the cliffs are calcareous sands. Miocene marine sediments posterior to the alpine folds were deposited in several places, notably in the eastern Corsican plain, at Saint-Florent and around Bonifacio.
