The reef terraces of the external facade of Maré Island, as here in the bay of Shabadran, are formed by the development of a fringing reef in the flats and notches of erosion. With a maximum thickness of 32.8ft (10m), they are essentially composed of lamellar corals which nest at the periphery of the island's reef mass.
