The polar bear is found in the Arctic on the fast ice, where shallow waters are biologically productive so it can easily hunt. In regions where the sea ice completely melts every year, it is forced to hide on banks and to draw on its reserves to survive. It is able to swim for hundreds of kilometers to reach regions where sea ice is formed first, at the end of the summer.
