The Arctic Ocean is covered with a large area of permanent sea ice (the pack) which can reach up to 4 m thick. It contains old ice because it partly melts in summer and slowly renews. Drifting 1 to 2 km per day, the pack is affected by cracks, crevasses, and ridges, due to frequent compressions and collisions of ice blocks. In summer, it releases ice blocks which can reach several km long (meltdown or debacle).
