The protection of the hands against the cold is essential during the Arctic expeditions. A good hand protection must be waterproof and must not interfere with blood circulation to avoid frostbites. Mittens, in which the jointed fingers pool their heat, provide better thermal protection than gloves. They must be supplemented with silk or aluminized fabric undergloves and a second layer of non-defatted wool gloves.
