Cooling off on the dung
1
0
Humid dung works like an air conditioner for the dung beetle. It goes on its way if the soil temperature is below 122°F (50°C) but spends nearly 70% of the time on its ball when it exceeds 140°F (60°C). When rolling its dung, the temperature of its front legs in contact with the ground can increase by 50°F (10°C). It decreases by 44°F (7°C) after 10 seconds on the dung.
