Catching preys in flight and on the ground
The Mangareva Kingfisher feeds on coconut beetles which it catches in flight. It also hunts reptiles (geckos, agamas...) by hopping on the ground, which is uncommon among Kingfishers. It looks for the shrubs of miki miki (Pemphis acidula), very resistant to salinity, or kahaia (Guettarda speciosa) of the family of tiares, to perch.
