Once a year, after mating, female scarlet macaws (Ara macao) choose a large natural cavity in a tree to lay their eggs, 7 to 40 m above the ground. They lay between 1 and 4 eggs that hatch after an incubation period of 24 to 28 days. The chicks take flight in the canopy after 14 weeks.
