Churches, temples, meeting houses abound in French Polynesia testifying to the efforts of Europe and the United States, especially the Mormons, to save the Maohi soul. The first Anglican preachers were sent by the London Missionary Society aboard the Duff in 1797. In alliance with the powerful Pomare dynasty, they succeeded better than the Spanish Catholic priests in extracting Polynesia from centuries of polytheistic ideology.
