Under these marble-white crosses from Lasa in Italy, are buried 9,387 soldiers and civilians, most of them very young. The religious symbols were copied from those of the First World War: the headstones of those of the Jewish faith are surmounted by a Star of David, and Latin crosses mark all others. The Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer contains the graves of the brothers Preston and Robert Niland (block F, row 15, graves 11 and 12) whose story inspired Steven Spielberg in his making of the film ‘Saving Private Ryan’.
