Due to a lack of archives, it is believed that the Bayeux Tapestry would probably have been exhibited in various castles and churches on both sides of the English Channel. In 1476, it adorned the cathedral of Bayeux, as evidenced by the inventory kept in the Departmental Archives of Calvados, and escaped its fires and lootings. The tapestry was rediscovered in the 18th century and used by people to cover their wagons during the French Revolution. It was barely saved by a scholar who offered to pay for a tarp to retrieve the tapestry, which ended up exhibited at the Centre Guillaume le Conquérant in Bayeux.
