The oak of Allouville-Bellefosse is probably 12 centuries old. Contemporary of Charlemagne, according to scientists, this dean of the oaks of France would have sheltered William the Conqueror when he left for England. It could have been felled during the French Revolution as its role as a religious sanctuary since 1696 made it an enemy of the sovereign People. In 1793, the village teacher, Jean-Baptiste Bonheure, had the idea to plant a sign there nicknaming it Temple of Reason and to hide the statue of the Virgin present in its trunk.
