L’Ashoka est un arbre de la famille des Caesalpinacées, originaire de l’Inde. Son nom en sanskrit veut dire « sans chagrin ».
C’est un arbre pyramidal, à feuillage dense, qui peut atteindre 10 mètres de haut.
Ses feuilles pennées ont des folioles d’un vert brillant, à bords ondulés, d’environ 20 centimètres de long.
Ses fleurs rouges orangées, très odorantes, sont regroupées en grappes arrondies.
