Through hydrolysis, the chemical reaction known as saponification produces glycerol, or glycerin, an aliphatic triol present in vegetable oils and fats in the form of esters (glycerides). Glycerin is then removed from the soap paste and joins the aqueous mixture at the bottom of the cauldron. It can be used in candle making, an industry annexed to soap making.
