Sand trodden by Christopher Columbus

On the Caribbean coast of Martinique between Bellefontaine and Saint-Pierre, the gray beach of Le Carbet has a special history. Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) and his men would indeed have stopped there on June 15, 1502, during the fourth and last voyage of the Genoese explorer still in search of a passage to China. They would have supplied themselves with water and wood before continuing their journey towards Hispaniola, present-day Haiti. The landing in this place of the man whom Western historiography considers the discoverer of America is commemorated by a sign still visible on the beach.
