La Vierge Noire avait été brûlée dans l’incendie de l’église Saint Paul en 1562.
L’ensemble avait été reconstruit en 1666 et la Vierge sera réalisée en pierre noire.
En 1940, le quartier entier a été bombardé et l’église Saint Paul n’était plus qu’un amas de décombres fumants.
Seul le petit sanctuaire était intact au milieu des ruines.
