With an average salinity of 1.2oz (35g) per liter, the sea begins to freeze at a surface temperature of -33.8°F (-1.8°C). The freezing temperature approaches 32°F (0°) when the salinity decreases, at the mouth of rivers, in glacier or iceberg areas, in some fjords. Freezing begins with the formation of fine needles or ice chips suspended in the water.
