Gothic saints and prophets

From the 13th century onwards, the great cathedrals were covered with an abundance of sculpted decoration illustrating the great cycles of Christian history. Built over more than a century between 1240 and 1365, the collegiate church of Saint-Martin in Colmar is attributed to two architects: Master Humbret (active around 1230-1240), master builder of the transept and the nave, and Guillaume de Marbourg (died in 1366) for the choir. The Unterlinden Museum is fortunate to have a collection of sculptures of saints and prophets that adorned the exterior and interior of the collegiate church.
