The typical small village of Saint Hippolyte is visible from the Haut-Koenigsbourg. It is a wine-growing town located on the Wine Route at an altitude of 820 ft (250 m). It is known for its Pinot Noir, the Rouge de Saint-Hippolyte. In 1627, the city was severely affected by an epidemic of plague and had crosses or calvaries baptized Cross of the Plague built. One is still observable at a place called Zollstoeckel, which dates from 1628. The city also suffered from the Thirty Years War, and one can see the remains of the ramparts that were supposed to protect it.
