Located away from the main axes of communication, the town of Saint-Claude, in the Jura department, is served by the rail line from Andelot-en-Montagne to La Cluse, also called 'ligne des Hirondelles'. This railway line, considered one of the most beautiful in France, crosses the Jura from north to south over 74 miles (120 km) between 984 and 3,116 feet (300 and 950 meters) of altitude, passing through 36 tunnels and 18 viaducts. It connects Dole to Saint-Claude in a 2.5 hour journey through the Chaux forest, the Arbois vineyards, the plateaus of Grandvaux and the Bienne valley.
