Sailing the Yonne river from west to east at the level of the town of Joigny, these tourists can see the historic heart of the city on their left. Built on a promontory on the coast (cuesta) of the Othe plateau, the old town overlooks the river which - only crossed by Saint-Nicolas bridge since the 12th century - served both as a protective barrier and as a way of communication for its inhabitants.
