Sacred 'tiki' of Raivavae

For centuries, several 'tiki' - these basalt stone satues symbolizing power and inspiring respect - stand facing the remains of the Moanaheiata marae in Raivavae, in the Austral archipelago of French Polynesia. The 'tapu' inflicted by the ancients on these statues makes them inviolable because of their sacredness. These 'tiki' also traditionally served as border markers.
