Feeding, a busy occupation

Zebras spend between 60% and 80% of their time feeding, mainly on grass, but also on leaves, fruits, buds, bark and roots. Their digestive system, made up of a single stomach but with caecal fermentation, assimilates the vegetable cellulose from their food thanks to the bacteria in their appendix which break it down and synthesize it.
