Feeding mainly on plankton, Manta rays frequent reef areas rich in plankton. When feeding, they hover in the water using the cephalic fins on either side of their heads to direct the food to their mouths. They also eat crustaceans and occasionally small fish. Their lower jaw has hundreds of very small teeth whose shape and disposition are a criterion for distinguishing species.
