Rurutu, humpback whale nursery
Humpback whale watching has become the main tourist attraction of Rurutu Island in the Austral archipelago. Each year, the whales arrive in late June early July and leave in late October early November. They come to mate around the island and to give birth to their only calf the following year after a gestation of eleven to twelve months.
