Geologically, Rurutu is a typical example of makatea. A makatea refers to the coral formation of an elevated island following tectonic movements or the passage of a second hot spot. These islands are usually ancient atolls whose inner depression is the former lagoon. They are also referred to as raised or exonde atoll. Rimatara is also a makatea, less spectacular.
