The old town of Arles (photo) is divided into several districts - Cité, Hauture, Méjan, Roquette, and La Cavalerie/Portagnel - located inside the medieval walls. The city center was geographically fixed from the end of the 12th century according to a first urban plan dating back to Emperor Augustus (1st century BC) which still structures it. The more recent peripheral districts reflect the developments undertaken in the 19th and 20th centuries following the social transformations of the city.
