In his historical description of Notre-Dame de Reims cathedral's exteriors, the Abbott Tourneur counted 211 massive statues from 9.8 to 13 ft (3 to 4 m), 126 medium, 936 small, and 788 animals of all sizes. On the inside stand 191 medium statues and 50 animals, for a total of more than 2,300 figures carved for the cathedral's decoration. Statues of the 15th century have been stored in the north tower. Craftsmen then favored simple drapes designed to focus attention on the imposing heads. Their style differs from the Flamboyant Gothic of the south facade.
