Roman traces

The Roman origins of Riquewihr are uncertain. However, one can only notice the similarity between the names of the Spiegele hill, at the feet of the village, and Roman watchtowers, or speculum, both translating to mirror. In addition, remains of a tower were discovered on the Spiegele. The red mortar between its bricks is similar to that used by the Romans. These guard towers were placed at the crossroads of trade or strategic routes. The ruins of Spiegele were, indeed, excavated near a road going up to the city of Aubure. If they did not found the city, the Romans probably garrisoned in the area.
