The village of Nonza is built on a rocky peak on the Cap Corse west coast. This cliff of 167 m (548 ft) high offers an unobstructed view over the Gulf of Saint-Florent: it was a strategic observation post in the 18th century during the Corsican uprising against Genoese domination. Mineral wastes from the old asbestos mine of Canari further north were pushed out of the sea and form the black pebble beach in the village below.
