The citadel of Sisteron is built at an altitude of 1,640ft (500m) on a strategic high place, the rocky outcrop overlooking the town itself located on the banks of the Durance in a narrow valley marking a necessary passage between Dauphiné and Provence. Considered by Henry IV as the most powerful fortress in his kingdom, it constitutes an essential bolt on the road linking the Alps to the Mediterranean.
