'Broody hen' rock, a taboo place

The Hienghène 'broody hen' is both one of the most emblematic tourist sites in New Caledonia and a taboo place for the inhabitants of the region because of the legend surrounding its appearance. It would have literally sprung from the waters in front of a group of children and explained to the chiefs of the Tiendanite, Werap and Tendo clans who rushed to see it that it was there to help them live in this remote area. Since then, offerings and nocturnal ceremonies continue to pay tribute to it.
