Rivers in South Africa and semi-desert regions have irregular hydrological regimes and come alive with precipitation. Often partially dry, their beds alternate sandy islets, grassy strips and mud streams. They attract the wild fauna which favors habitats close to water points and comes to drink and hydrate at dawn and dusk.
