Riots in Saint Hippolyte
0
0
In 1525, the peasants of northern Alsace rebelled against the tithe tax and the right to fish and hunt. At first claimed calmly, the revolt spread to the Val de Villé and the Lorraine town of Saint-Hippolyte. The peasants occupied the city with the support of the local bourgeoisie. Duke Antoine sent a detachment to Saint-Hippolyte. The surviving inhabitants, including the children from seven to twelve years old, were sentenced to walk in procession barefoot and with uncovered heads, a candle in hand. They were, moreover, condemned to send each year to the Duke of Lorraine twelve cartloads of good white wines of twenty-four measures each.
