In Rimatara, the black rat remains the enemy, it is one of the rare Polynesian islands to remain free of this creature. On other islands, rats have arrived thanks to the boats and ate defenseless eggs of the Kuhl's lorikeet. Thus, in order to keep this situation as such drastic measures have been taken and any cargo approaching the island is first put in quarantine before being able to dock.
