Rimatara lorikeet

Rimatara parakeet (also called Kuhl's lorikeet) is a symbol of the importance of the birds in Rimatara's inhabitants unconscious. Understanding the origins of the settlement of the first inhabitants is mandatory in order to understand the population's interest in this small bird.
Rimatara is both at the same time the most ancient island of the Austral archipelago but also the most isolated. Birds certainly overflew the boats of the first sailors-pioneers thus indicating the presence of an island nearby.
Nowadays, Rimatara's inhabitants protect this species with shining colors. Rimatara has even become a shelter to the Kuhl's lorikeet whereas it is threatened with extinction in the neighboring islands.
