The Kuhl's Lorikeet is also called 'Rimatara lorikeet' because the immense majority of this endangered species lives in Rimatara. Contrary to its neighbors, this island has been spared by the double threat of black rats and cats imported by sailors. The re-introduction of the Kuhl's lorikeet in the Cook Islands has started in April 2007 with the settlement of 27 specimens taken in Rimatara.
