Diagonal arches support the quarters of the ribbed vaults of Saint Stephen Cathedral in Metz. This system cannot be deformed, and it is then possible to reduce the walls' thickness and drill large openings. Gothic art culminates in the cathedral with its 136 ft high nave (41.41 m). Though the exterior of the monument is richly decorated with laces and gables, its interior rises soberly, thus reinforcing the impression of height.
