The South African economy was entirely dependent on agriculture before the discovery of diamonds in 1871 and gold in 1886. Since then, the richnesses of the subsoil far exceed those of the soil which now represent only 2.8% of the national product gross. The country also abunds in platinum, manganese, chrome and vanadium.
